Julius Caesar is assassinated on March 15th, 44BC at the theatre of Pompey by a group of senators.

Julius Caesar was one of the most influential people in Rome to ever live. As his popularity grew as one of three triumvirates, Caesar made more and more enemies. He fought in Gaul for 9 years, and came back triumphant which made him even more of a superstar in Rome. After this, Caesar’s enemies in the senate began to worry about what Caesar could do. The senate ordered Caesar back to Rome without his troops, presumably to kill him. He makes the decision to come back to Rome, but accompanied by his troops. He crosses the Rubicon river and speaks the famous quote ”The die is cast.”. This prompts a civil war, and with Crassus dead, it is left between Caesar and Pompey. They finally fight in the battle of Pharsalus and Caesar wins, forcing Pompey to flee to Egypt. Caesar is declared dictator for one year in 48 BC, which signals the end of the republic.

During his time as dictator, Caesar accomplishes many things, making him very popular. After a year of great reforms, he declares himself dictator for life, and none of Caesar’s reforms could save him of his fate. The Republicans feared a return of the monarchy, and formulated a plan to take Caesar out. Also, the latifundia wanted their land back and would not be stopped until they got it. Brutus and Cassius, both Caesar’s best friends, formulate a plan to assassinate Caesar. On the Ides of march, Caesar is told that there is a meeting at the Theatre of Pompey with the senate, and he goes. He is greeted by a group of senators who pull out their daggers and stab him 23 times until he is dead. Julius Caesar was an amazing and influential person Rome, and he finally met his match and was killed by his own people on March 15th, 44 BC.
